I began my green smoothie journey about 5 years ago. I have suffered with consistently low iron for most of my adult life, enter peri-menopause and whoa! What I thought couldn't get any worse, got worse! I did IV transfusions and that would give me a boost but nothing seemed to last.
My first green smoothie consisted of 4 oz. of fresh orange juice, half a frozen banana, (to add some taste) and as much spinach as I could jam into the blender cup. It wasn't spectacular, but it did the trick and before long my iron started to stay level. Not high, just level.
Since then my diet has changed significantly, and my periods have mellowed out a lot and so my green smoothie game got a little bit tastier.
It's still simple, but you can really pack a lot of nutrients into one smoothie, so feel free to mix it up a little!
Handful of spinach
Handful of ice
1/2 banana (could be frozen)
Scoop of your favourite vanilla protein powder
1 tbsp hemp hearts
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
Optional additions : pea shoots, cauliflower rice, avocado, just to name a few. If you use a greens supplement this is a great place to throw a scoop in. You may need to add a bit more milk or if you like smoothie bowls it may be perfect - you do you!
Enjoy and tell me in the comments if you try this!
